After writing many articles for couples who are trying to choose the gender of their baby, I came across a really interesting article written from a man’s perspective. Sam and his wife had 4 children, all daughters, and for years he had said “I want to have a baby boy” each time his wife was pregnant.
He mentioned how he had often got raised eyebrows from work colleagues when he mentioned he had 4 daughters and he would say, “I want to have a baby boy but it’s just not happened yet!” People would make jibes about how there would be a queue for the bathroom when they were all older and how he would have to save up for 4 weddings.
Sam would tell how after the birth of daughters number 3 and 4, virtual strangers would stop him in the street and ask him if he’d been hoping for a boy. Deep down this was really upsetting for him as he did want a boy. Sure, he loved each of his daughter’s fiercely but after the birth of his fourth daughter he said to his wife “I want to have a baby boy” and they both vowed they would try again.
He felt that he’d seen his DNA replicated in female form 4 times and felt it was not unreasonable to want to see it in male form! He felt that his daughters would not have the benefit of seeing things from a male sibling perspective and learn what he called “life lessons” from having a “gender blend”. Also, from a selfish point of view, he was really looking forward to handing over his gold-crested cufflinks and gold pocket watch to a “son and heir”.
His wife’s take on all this was that she felt that a son was almost like a “necessity”, a way of tying up loose ends as her own father had really wanted a son but she was one of three girls. Also, she felt that Sam had never really enjoyed the benefits of a father-son relationship, having sadly lost his father at a young age and she knew that he deserved to have that elusive father-son relationship.
In reality, he was unsure whether there was anything which could be done to influence the gender of a baby. He and his wife had considered and then shunned treatment at one of Europe’s leading gender selection clinics. However, he felt that there was some grain of truth about children of one sex running in the family. His wife was one of three girls and his own family was largely dominated by females.
Sam decided that he would try to sway matters naturally and began to search to see if there was anything which could be done as he would still say to his wife, “I want a baby boy” despite having their four beautiful daughters. They tried a combination of dietary and lifestyle measures, plus they took advice on the timings of intercourse and tips to alter the pH balance in the vagina.
A year later, his fifth child was a boy and he describes his elation as he was walking towards the maternity ward the day after the birth and could hear a newborn crying and with an inane smile, he realized it was his son. As he telephoned his best friend to tell him the news, he had shouted “You’re a man!”
